Abbie

My dog and best friend of 13 years passed away yesterday and it was one of the toughest things that I have ever had to endure. I remember going up to a shelter near the Castle in the Clouds in NH the day that we got her. She was one of several mut puppies born to a German Shepherd father and Greyhound mother. The litter was really roudy and there were about eight of nine of them. But Abbie calmly strolled up to me, popped up on her little hind legs and licked my face, and I knew that she was the one. "Mommy, I want this one!" It was decided, and I named her Abigail, after my kindnergarten sweetheart. I miss her already and it is very strange knowing that she won't be there to greet me the next time that I leave Keene and head home for a visit. The sadness in this situation is somewhat counteracted by the fact that Krystin and I just celebrated our 4th year anniversary on the 5th a while back, which was great, but the loss of my Abbie has been really hard on me. My father and I had planned on having her put down last week, and I made the trip home last Wednesday to be there for her. That day turned out to be really good in the end. When we arrived at the Vet's, we determined that it was too early to put her down, as Abbie was generally happy, eating and walking on her own. So we waited. Ultimately, the tough decision was made a week later and Abbie went peacefully, but for the entirety of Wednesday and much of Thursday morning it was just like old times. I was able to spend a lot of time with my canine compainion. I had a good time feeing her, giving her medicine wrapped in roast beef, hanging out on the couch (yes they allowed her on the couch) and even taking a long nap by her side. I must have taken between three and four hundred pictures while I was home visiting my Abbie. All and all, this last bit of bonding with her has provided me with a great deal of closure and lifted my spirits a bit. I have no doubt that you are in a better place now Abbie, and am glad that Lucy has a new playmate up there. I love you so much girl and will never forget you.

Just finished Ham on Rye, now I need some beets...

Not only a delicious sandwich, but a pretty powerful read. Just tackled my second Bukowski novel and grabbed some Vonnegut and Kerouac from KPL for later.

Vacation

I had a great week at home. The only downside was being away from Krystin, but I was fortunate enough to hang out with my family and a couple of my best friends. I finally spent some time with Josh, who's home from Alaska for a bit on leave. We hung out with his daughter, went mini-golfing, fishing, and had an overall good time before he goes back to Fort Richardson. I even caught a 21" bass! I got some new shoes from Sam (my other best friend) and went to the fireworks in Meredith with her, Ross, and their friends.

Homecoming

Next week Josh (one of my best friends) is finally coming home from Alaska to see his daughter, Lily-Ann, for the first time. His family and friends haven't seen him in close to half a year since he joined the Army. It'll be nice to go fishing or something. Pretty excited.

"Don't Try..."

Unconventional words of wisdom from my man, the late Charles Bukowski. Note that this was largely directed at aspiring writers, in regards to material. I'm sure it has a broader audience though. Sometimes you just need to take a step back and let life happen.

Writing.

I've finally taken to the keyboard again after a quite extensive hiatus. This time in the form of short stories. I've decided to forego novels for a while. This new ambition only took the purchase of a portable, teal green typewriter constucted in Holland circa 1963. I am sort of an impulse buyer, and like most good Americans, a hungry consumer. At least I attempt to justify my purchases with backassward logic though-e.g. "I'll write more, but only if I have archaic machinery."

Anyway, when it arrives in the mail from Tennessee I'll post pictures of the 1963 singer scholastic, aka my newest tool of the trade.

*Until then I'm being a total tool and using Typewriter font on my laptop, lol.

It Begings!

Just had Jen slap 8 books on my desk today at my internship and this leadership development project finally has some fuel (sips the black iced coffee and gets to work).

Declaration: Messin' with Paint

Hey everyone,

FYI--this post is going to be random incarnate.

So, while scolling through the picture archives on my computer I came across a little typography piece that I did via the paint program on my computure (high-tech, I know). I just thought I'de share it to let you know how crazy and impulsive that I can be. For me, I am driven by the 'what ifs' in life, the grand sheme of things, if you will. This often drives people crazy, especially Krystin, and Jana, my supervisor at work. Anyways, the piece is comprised of some of the core founding fathers of Sociology, when you find my addition please know that I am not concieted, but rather that I had just declared my undergraduate major and wanted a personal reminder to stick with it. This graphic keeps me honest, focused and my academic fire burning. I don't know exactly why, but images are what work for me. I'm a visual learner.

Fun fact: before I declared my major as Sociology with a double minor in Political Science and Criminal Justice I was an Art Major (though this quick piece probably doesn't portray that all too well, lol.)

Welcome!

Hello all,

Thank you for visiting, perusing, or stumbling upon my page. I want to start by letting everyone know that I'm completely new at blogging and have pursued it because I have a passion for writing and want to do it more. KC's Quarters is where I've decided to just that. It is my needed escape from relentless research and academic writing, a place where I can express myself and grow as a writer. Currently, I am a successful scholastic writer and independent researcher, but as far as novels go (I've only started one) I'm a bit of a hack. Practice makes perfect though, and this is the venue. KC's Quarters is where I'll write for writing's sake--about my life, travels, studies, the books I'm reading. I'll also provide progress reports for the novels that I'm writing and insights about food, culture, society, politics and whetever else anybody wants to throw into the mix!

Now you know why I blog.

In this introductory post, I would really enjoy it if you would tell me a little bit about yourselves, why you blog/how long you've been blogging, and post links to your page(s). Also, any words of wisdom and/or tips that you can give a rookie blogger like myself would be much appreciated.

Thanks.
